Project Summary:
Human adult body harbors ~10 times more microbial cells than its own. Their genomes (the microbiome) contain 100 times the genes of our own genome and endow us with several crucial services.Although, distal gut in humans has highest bacterial density and variety, other body parts are likewise populated by other phylotypes of bacteria. Their diverse and multifunctional abilities demonstrate their participation and essential role in maintaining human health. Normal body microbiota is reported to supportcrucial functions such as regulation of immune system, digestion, intestinal development, nutrition supplementation and prevention of pathogenic bacteria. Alterations in the normal microbial inhabitants are shown to be associated with several diseases such as diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, colitis, cancer, respiratory disorders, vaginosis and obesity. To obtain a more comprehensive view of microbial world of human body, we propose this study of human microbiome in Health and Demographic Surveillance System setting in India. We propose to analyze bacterial diversityexisting at various sites on human body such as oral cavity, feces and skin. The study involves microbial identification based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, supported by deep sequencing on 50 normal individuals with different age groups. The study will eventually be useful in determining the core microbiome of human body and will pave way to a new frontier of human biology and strategies essential for maintenance of human health.
